Weekend Events in the Mountains, July 9 - 11

9    WAYNESVILLE   Mountain Street Dances   Both local residents and tourists enjoy these FREE old-fashioned mountain hoedowns which began in the 1950s with live mountain music and dance demonstrations by local clogging teams. This year we are celebrating the Blue Ridge Parkway’s 75th Anniversary. Dances are held in front of the Haywood County Courthouse and begin at 6:30 p.m. and last until 9:00 p.m. Bring a lawn chair or blanket; limited bleacher seating is available. 9   TRYON  Rogers Park Summer Tracks Concert Series   The Concert Series is back with a great line up of first class performances and a summer of wonderful evenings under the stars. Red Hot Sugar Babies, Marc Yaxley Trio

9-10   ROBBINSVILLE   Cherokee Days   We celebrate Cherokee heritage with storytelling, song, and dance, as well as instruction in Cherokee crafts presented by members of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians

9   HENDERSONVILLE   Music On Main Street Concert Series  The 12th annual Music On Main Street concert series will be held every Friday evening from June 11 through August 27, 2010. Music On Main Street featuring " oldies rock, beach music, variety and top 40 music. Bring a chair and enjoy the music, admission is free.

9 - 10   BOONE   MusicFest ‘n Sugar Grove   Music to remember on the cool banks of Cove Creek in Sugar Grove, North Carolina. MusicFest ‘n Sugar Grove is a chance to hear many talented artists, who are preserving our music heritage and celebrating the diversity it has inspired.  Blue Ridge Parkway 75,  Milepost 285

9 - 11   ASHEVILLE   Carolina Mountain Ribfest  World Class professional barbecue rib vendors from all over the country, live entertainment, amusement rides, arts & crafts and more. They will be serving mouth watering, award winning BBQ Ribs, Brisket, Pulled Pork and Chicken, with all the traditional side dishes. WNC Agricultural Center in Fletcher.

9-13   TRYON   82nd Annual Tryon Horse Show  Bring a picnic with your lawn chair and enjoy fresh summer breezes while watching some of the finest equestrian competition in the area.

10  ASHEVILLE   Shindig on the Green  The celebrated mountain tradition, Shindig on the Green, which showcases the region’s rich heritage through its folk musicians and dancers, kicks off its 44th annual season in 2010.  Between 3000 and 5000 people attend Shindig on the Green each evening for free throughout the summer. 10   ROBBINSVILLE   An Appalachian Evening   Experience award-winning bluegrass, folk, and old-time mountain music performances in the historic old school auditorium at the Stecoah Valley Cultural Arts Center. The concert series features live entertainment for the entire family every Saturday night from June 26 through August 28. The event includes an authentic Appalachian dinner, cooked up in the Stecoah kitchen and served family-style in two seatings, before each concert.   Blue Ridge Parkway 75 Event, Milepost 480

10   OLD FORT   Mountain Gateway Museum and Heritage Center - 2nd Saturdays   Trout Fishing Events will include fly fishing lessons and fly-tying demonstrations. Wildlife and animals in art will be featured.  Blue Ridge Parkway 75, Milepost 350

10   LITTLE SWITZERLAND   Geneva Hall Square Dances   This square dance has been going on in our little village for over 20 years. We welcome visitors and tourists to join us in a traditional square dance complete with a caller, live bluegrass band, and lots of local character. 10     SALUDA  47th Annual Coon Dog Day Festival   Come enjoy this homecoming event in downtown Saluda. What began as a chicken supper fundraiser for the local Coon Club has grown into an event that attracts over 10,000 people each year. Live music on stage begins in the morning around 9 and continues all day until the end of the street dance at 10:00 PM.

10-11 ASHEVILLE   American Bamboo Society SE Chapter 4th annual Bamboo Festival: The American Bamboo Society’s Southeastern Chapter hosts this extremely popular event which features bamboo nurseries offering living bamboo plants as well as artists and crafters demonstrating and selling their products. Visitors learn about the artistic value and functionality of this remarkable grass. The weekend includes lectures, demonstrations, crafts, and plant sales.

10 - 12   ASHEVILLE  The Grove Park Inn's 97th birthday  The Grove Park Inn opened its doors on Saturday, July 12, 1913. Join in the anniversary festivities with guided history tours, live music, cake, and a birthday toast for a one-of-a-kind birthday celebration.

10   ROBBINSVILLE   An Appalachian Evening Summer Concert   featuring the Lonesome River Band. 7:30 pm. It takes a lot of ambition for a band to stay together for over 25 years, but the award-winning LRB continues to amaze their loyal fans every step of the way

11   BREVARD   Songcatchers Music Series  In its seventh year, the Songcatcher Music Series showcases acoustic music with roots in the Southern Appalachians and the musicians who nurture the tradition of passing this heritage on to others. Concerts begin with a 30-minute opening act by local musicians. After a short break, the featured performer will begin.  Blue Ridge Parkway 75 Event, Milepost 410
