NC Governor Beverly Perdue announced last Thursday that North Carolina is now home to 100 wineries. The 100th winery in North Carolina is Cauble Creek Vineyard in Salisbury. North Carolina is now seventh in wine production and 10th in grape production nationally,” Gov. Perdue said during a press conference at Cauble Creek Vineyard. “Our wine industry is made up of small business owners, entrepreneurs and farmers. It’s marketed by our tourism industry which daily impacts small businesses.”
North Carolina’s wine and grape industry accounts for more than 5,700 jobs with total economic impact as much as $813 million. North Carolina also ranks among the top five states in the country as a destination for culinary tourism according to a 2007 Travel Industry Association (now known as U.S. Travel Association) survey. The number of wineries in the state has grown dramatically recently. In 2005, the state boasted around 50 wineries making both European vinifera and muscadine wines; in five years, that number has doubled to 100 wineries today.
