Saluda Celebrates 130th Anniversary with Festivals and Discounts

The Victorian style Village of Saluda NC celebrates its 130th Anniversary in 2011. Located in the “Thermal Belt” of the Blue Ridge Mountains the warm air hovering over Saluda allows for a more moderate climate, warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. Saluda's Main Street Historic District was recently listed on the National Register of Historic Places and Main Street is now a North Carolina Scenic Byway.

The Saluda area began as Pace's Gap, a crossroads for traders and herders.The Railroad line between Spartenburg and Hendersonville was completed in 1877, carried it's first passenger on July 4 1879 and added  the final leg to Asheville in 1885. Southern Railroad took over the line in 1895. On February 1, 1881 the City of Saluda was granted a charter by the North Carolina Legislature marking the beginnings of the town's popularity as a summer vacation destination and mountains gateway.

Events celebrating Saluda's 130th Anniversary will be held throughout 2011 and merchants will be offering a variety of 130th specials and discounts . May events include:


May 7 - Biddie's is offering a 13.0% discount on sales.

May 10 - "Jamming in the Park" on the 130th day of 2011,  from 6:00 PM. until 8:00 PM. Join the celebration with a picnic in McCreery Park. If you play a musical instrument, sing, dance, tell stories, or have a talent that is entertaining, plan to bring a picnic supper to the park and join the jamming or just enjoy the many talents of others. These area restaurants are participating with picnic specials:
Ward's Grill: Two hot dogs, chips, and a drink for $6 OR three chicken fingers, cole slaw, potato salad, and a drink for $7. Call in order beforehand or order the day of picnic.
Green River BBQ: Smoked turkey salad sandwich on whole wheat bread with homestyle potato chips, chocolate chip cookie, and a drink for $7.99. Call ahead or pick up anytime. Say it is for Jamming in the Park Picnic.
Purple Onion: "Jamming in the Park Picnic Pizza" being offered at a 10% discount.

May 21-
  8th Annual Arts and Music Festival    The town of Saluda celebrates the talent of more than 50 outstanding local artists and craftspeople from Western North Carolina and the Upstate of South Carolina.

June 4 - Tour of Historic Homes sponsored by The Historic Saluda Committee. 1 - 5 PM., as part of Saluda's 130th Anniversary Celebration and as a fundraiser for preservation projects in Saluda. Historic Smith Hill has been chosen as the site of the tour. There will be six homes, a teahouse and two additional smaller buildings on the tour, all within walking distance of each other.

Tickets are $20 each and are available at City Hall and Heartwood Gallery in Saluda. Parking is available at the First Baptist Church at the corner of Carolina and Henderson Streets, and shuttle vans will be available to take you to Smith Hill for the tour. Tickets will also be available at the Saluda Arts Festival on May 21.

June 24 - Free Square Dance Lessons; Saluda Mountain Jamboree 7Pm-9:00pm

July 1 - Free Square Dance Lessons; Saluda Mountain Jamboree 7:00pm to 9:00pm. 
July 2 - Oral History DVD will be shown and will be for sale; Saluda Mountain Jamboree 5:00pm - 6:30pm.  Celebration Square Dance at Saluda Mountain Jamboree from 7pm-10pm.  $5 donation.
July 4 - Celebration birthday cake and pot luck at McCreery Park from 6-8pm with Jeff Hayes Bluegrass Band  
July 9 - City of Saluda Coon Dog Day 
July 29 - Macon Bank Open House with Refreshments 
August - "Saluda Art Images" at Saluda Center all month.

August 14 - Children's Concert at the Purple Onion with Sol Driven Train

December 4 - Free Christmas Concert at the Jamboree
December 9 -Hometown Christmas stroll
December 10 - Celebration Christmas Parade at 2pm.
December 17 - Celebration Christmas Home Decoration Contest.  Judging on December 17, must be within Saluda city limits, outside decorations and lighting.  Prize:  Commemorative 130th Plaque.
