Mountain Mitchell Craft Fair this Weekend in Burnsville

August 2-3   Mount Mitchell Craft Fair  Hundreds of vendors and thousands of visitors will participate in the 56th Annual Mt. Mitchell Crafts Fair. 

The event takes place on the Town Square and surrounding streets. Handcrafters from all over the United States come to sell their wares including baskets, candles, kettle corn, pottery, stained glass, and so much more. The event is free to the public with entertainment throughout the day.

Blue Ridge Parkway Section Closed from Storm Damage

The Blue Ridge Parkway is closed to all traffic, including pedestrian and bicycle traffic, from Milepost 376 at Ox Creek Road to Milepost 355 at Mt Mitchell State Park due to structural damage from recent heavy rains.

Three different detours are available. Get a map and specific details HERE.


As of this writing thatis the only closure on the Parkway. Be sure to always check the Blue Ridge Parkway Road Closure Map before embarking on your adventure.

29th Annual Grassy Creek Gem Show in Spruce Pine

July 29 - August   29th Annual Grassy Creek Gem Show   An outdoor gem show featuring dealers from around the world. Items for sale include jewelry, raw minerals and jewels, equipment, gemstones, fossils and more. There are 72 dealers who have all kinds of gemstones, mineral specimens, jewelry, beads, fossils, and lots more. Admission is FREE. Parking is FREE.

Blue Ridge Music Center Features Balsam Range and Cullen's Bridge

August 4 - The Blue Ridge Music Center Special Music on The Mountain Concert featuring two notable bluegrass bands, Balsam Range and Cullen's Bridge from North Carolina, kicking off a week of great music and the beginning of the Old Fiddlers Convention in Galax, VA.

This is the third special concert programmed at the Blue Ridge Music Center to celebrate the region's bluegrass music before the activities at the Fiddlers convention begin - giving locals and visitors alike, more opportunity to hear the highest caliber, mountain music.

Balsam Range is a band of five, outstanding musicians and singers from Haywood County featuring: Tim  Surrett - lead vocals and bass,  Buddy Melton - tenor vocals and fiddle,  Caleb Smith - guitar and vocals, Darren Nicholson - mandolin and harmony vocals,  as well as Marc Pruett - bluegrass banjo and vocals. The group is known for their fine musicianship, original song-writing and their tight arrangements. 


Balsam Range has seven National #1 Songs. Including: "Last Train To Kitty Hawk," "Caney Fork River," "Trains I Missed," and others. Recently, they were presented the "keys to the city" in Canton, NC where they were honored with an official declaration of "Balsam Range Day" in their home county for their positive contributions to our community. Since the start of Balsam Range, they have raised tens of thousands of dollars for regional and national charities. Balsam Range has quite a following of loyal fans and when you hear them you will know why they are so popular!

Cullen's Bridge is a bluegrass band formed by Mickey Galyean and other hot pickers from Lowgap that honors the music of Mickey's father, great songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Cullen Galyean. The group's musical experience combines a century of rich bluegrass and gospel music. From pure gospel to traditional and contemporary bluegrass, Cullen's Bridge is known for precision picking, great harmonies, and their warm stage presence.

The Music on the Mountain concert starts at 7 PM. Gates open at 5:30 PM. Tickets: $15. Children 12 and under are free. All ticket sales support the daily free programs and non-profit traditional music concert series. July 26-28   The Grandfather Mountain Campout  A special opportunity to camp in MacRae Meadows on Grandfather Mountain and take part in day and night activities led by Grandfather’s naturalists and interpretive rangers. Additional cost and reservations required.

Gemboree this Weekend in Franklin NC

July 25 - 28   48th Annual Macon County Gemboree   The Second oldest gem and mineral show in the Southeast features dealers from across the United States. Rough and cut gemstones, minerals, lapidary equipment and much more. The event is sponsored by the Franklin Chamber of Commerce and the Gem and Mineral Society of Franklin.

Franklin North Carolina is a center of history, heritage and the NC mountain way of life. Franklin celebrated its 150th Anniversary in 2005 and continues to honor it's heritage while embracing the future. Nestled in North Carolina’s southernmost mountains, the foothills of the Great Smokies, the Franklin area offers both a slower pace and a abundance of things to do.

The area is famous for is rural beauty, but not isolated with access to major highways US 23/441 and US 64, and major interstates I-40, I-26 and I-85. Atlanta, Georgia is just 127 miles to the south, while Asheville is 65 miles to the east.

Garrison Keillor and A Prairie Home Campanion come to the Brevard music Center

July 23    A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor at The Brevard Music Center   A Prairie Home Companion's Radio Romance Tour 2013 hits the road coast-to-coast this summer, starring host and writer Garrison Keillor, singer Aoife O'Donovan, comedian Fred Newman, Rich Dworsky and The Guy's All-Star Shoe Band with guitarist Pat Donohue and violinist/mandolinist Richard Kriehn, two hours of duet singing, absurd improv with sound effects, Guy Noir Private Eye, poetry, outright foolishness, and the News from Lake Wobegon.

Aoife O'Donovan, of Boston and Brooklyn NY, is the lead singer of Crooked Still and Sometymes Why and sang on The Goat Rodeo Sessions with Yo-Yo Ma and Chris Thile. She collaborated with the Dave Douglas Quintet on Be Still, My Soul, listed by many jazz critics as one of the best albums of 2012. The Guy's All-Star Shoe Band is an all-purpose roots quintet covering blues, jugband, primitive jazz, good timey, R&B, swing, and hillbilly, with occasional ventures into classical, romantic, French cafe, music hall, surfer, spa, and Scandihoovian. Fred Newman is a storyteller and sound-effects artist and author of the best-selling MouthSounds.

Old TIme Week Begins at The Swanannoa Gathering

July 21 - 27    Swanannoa Gathering - Old Time Week   Explore the rich music, dance, and singing traditions of the southern Appalachian region through a wide variety of classes taught by an experienced and supportive staff. Evening activities include jam sessions, singing, square dances, clogging, concerts, and the popular Late-Night Honky-Tonk Dance.

For those students bringing their families, we also offer a program for kids, but space is limited. The Children's Program for ages 6-12 features kids' activities scheduled during all the daytime class sessions, and evening childcare for ages 3-12 is provided at no additional cost.

Learn about the ghosts that haunt the old buildings that make up downtown Wilkesboro. The Craft Fair of the Southern Highlands Begins Today in Asheville

July 18 - 21   Semi-annual Craft Fair of the Southern Highlands   Over 200 exhibitors, craft demonstrations, and live regional music and entertainment bring Asheville's Civic (Cellular) Center alive with fine traditional and contemporary crafts. Both levels of the Center offer artisans exhibiting and selling works of clay, fiber, glass, leather, metal, mixed media, natural materials, paper, wood and jewelry.

The Fair showcases the work of members of the Southern Highland Craft Guild with members living in the mountain counties of nine states from Maryland to Alabama.

Spruce Pine BBQ Championship and Bluegrass Festival

July 19 - 20 Spruce Pine BBQ Championship and Bluegrass Festival  This event features a sanctioned professional barbecue competition, a wings contest, public tastings, live bluegrass music, a cornhole tournament, championship clogging teams, craft vendors, BBQ equipment and supplies vendors, local food vendors, the Spruce Pine Skedaddle 5K and Fun Run, a kids play-area.

The Spruce Pine BBQ Championship and Bluegrass Festival is hosted by Spruce Pine Main Street and the Rotary Club of Spruce Pine, and is sanctioned by the Southern BBQ Network. Don't forget to bring your lawn chairs for the live music performances.

Storytelling: Amy’s story is called “Gathering of the Stories”—a step back to the time she began to write her trilogy of family stories. Background music: “Shout to the Lord” by David Bauer.

Creative Corner: Doreyl’s guest is Dan Pattillo from Cane Creek in Cullowhee, who talks about discovering the flora of Western North Carolina. Music: “Cullowhee” by Henry Queen.

Stories of Mountain Folk: Amy welcomes 88-year-old Sally Gwinn Kesler from the Cartoogechaye community of Franklin, NC, who tells some of the story of her life. Music: "Abiding in the Vine” by Betty Brown.

Black Roots of Appalachia: Victoria visits with Reva Dorsey from Sylva, who remembers some of her life and family. Music: "High, Low and Wide” by the Golden Gate Quartet.

Celtic Week at The Swanannaoa Gathering

July 14 - 20     Swanannoa Gathering - Celtic Week   This year’s lineup features present or former members of the supergroups Lúnasa, Danú, Ossian, Solas, Battlefield Band, The House Band, and Cherish the Ladies, several other exciting new faces, and the return of some old friends.

New this year are more song and flute classes, and sean-nós and set dancing. The week will feature classes, potluck sessions, concerts, jams, dances and a ‘Food Songs Night,’ with delicious fare provided by the Seasonal School of Culinary Arts.

"Slow Jams" and Songs Swaps take place from 6 - 7 PM. Public concerts, dances, jams begin at 7:30 PM.

Old Fort Mountain Gateway Museum Second Saturday Program

July 13    2nd Saturdays - Heart and Soul   This program will feature the "Heart and Soul: Black Churches of McDowell County" exhibit. Jakia Probst, District Winner of the National Poetry Out Loud competition will have two performances over the course of the day.
 

The Addie's Chapel Choir will be performing at 1 PM. The event is held on the grounds of Mountain Gateway Museum. The 2nd Saturdays summer programs are sponsored statewide by the N.C. Cherokee Hosts Trout Fishing Tournament this Weekend

July 12 - 14    Mid-Summer Trout Fishing Tournament   $10,000 in tagged fish in the rivers on the Cherokee Reservation (excluding the 2.2 miles of catch and release waters) Hundreds of specially tagged fish will be stocked in the Cherokee public fishing waters.

When a tagged fish is caught it can be redeemed for cash prizes ranging from $20 to $500 based on the color of the tag. Open to all ages and for all legal fishing methods. Registration necessary to redeem cash prize.

Mountain in Bloom Festival this week in Higholands NC

July 11 - 14    The 14th Annual Mountains in Bloom Garden Festival in Highlands NC   Over 1,000 garden and nature lovers from across the US come together to celebrate. The event features a tour of majestic mountain gardens in the Ravenel community, a flower show that includes flower arrangement, horticulture and photography divisions, an exclusive Benefactor tour of the Southern Highlands Reserve and the always elegant Benefactor Party.

Grandfather Mountain Hosts the 58th Annual Highlands Games

July 11-14    The 58th Annual Grandfather Mountain Highland Games and Gathering O' Scottish Clans   Join 1000s of Scots in 85 clans decked out in their finest plaid for the annual celebration of Scottish heritage. Live Celtic music, tradition heritage events and Highlands games.  New this year is a Saturday night Celtic Rock Concert.

The Gathering begins on Thursday with a picnic, sheep herding and Celtic music. At 7:30 PM
The Bear: Assault on Grandfather, a five-mile footrace climbs 1,568 feet in elevation from the town of Linville to the summit of Grandfather Mountain. Over 800 runners will start up the Old Yonahlossee Road from Linville at 7 PM, circle the Highland Games track around 7:15, and head up the Grandfather Mountain summit road. The evening concludes with a torchlight ceremony.


Friday begins with a mountain bike race and continues with a Preliminary athletic competition, sheep herding, music/dancing exhibitions. Celtic Groves will be open and other activities will highlight the day. The official opening ceremony will be held.

After serving 19 years in jail for having stolen a loaf of bread for starving relatives, Valjean decides to break his parole and start his life anew, but he is relentlessly tracked down by a police inspector named Javert. Along the way, Valjean and his cohorts get swept into a revolutionary period in France, where a group of young idealists make their last stand at a street barricade.

Great Smoky Mountains Rail Road BBQ and Brews Dinner Train

July 6    BBQ and Brews Dinner Train    The First ever Barbeque and Brews Dinner Trains featuring locally hand-crafted beer from Nantahala Brewing Company and Heinzelmannchen Brewery plus slow-cooked authentic North Carolina Barbeque.

The train departs Bryson City Depot at 7 PM and returns at 9 PM traveling through the scenic mountain countryside to the Fontana Trestle for a spectacular sunset. NC 4th of July Events: Asheville's Second Annual Carnavalito Music Festival at Pisgah Brewery

July 3-4  Second Annual Carnavalito Music Festival   Held at the Pisgah Brewing Company Outdoor stage, surrounded by the beautiful Blue Ridge mountains. Toubab Krewe will host and headline this 2-day celebration of Independence Day.

The Lineup: July 3rd - Toubab Krewe with Gates opening at 8:00 PM and the show starting at 9:00 PM. July 4th - Toubab Krewe, Sol Driven Train, The Broadcast, DJ Camero and Chompin’ At The Bit (Indoor late night show 11 PM). Gates open at 2:00 PM with the show beginning at 3:00 PM.

4th of July Events: Lake Lure NC Fireworks and 4th of July Celebration

July 4 - Rumbling Bald Resort's 4th of July Celebration at Lake Lure    Enjoy a day and evening of family fun and activities from 8 AM until 10 PM on Independence Day.

The Boardwalk Arts and Crafts Sale
includes the works of local artists and crafters displaying along the Lake Lure boardwalk near the members' marina.
The Show and Sale will be held from 9 AM - 5 PM. 


There will also be a Kids Zone at the Beach, Fire truck rides and temporary tattoos, Bingo at the Pavilion and a golf cart parade.  KIDS GAMES INCLUDE:
  • 10:30 am - Water Balloon Toss (all ages) game court
  • 11:30 am - Rubber Ducky Sprint (under 12) Trout Stream Bridge
  • 12:30 pm - Frozen T-shirt Contest (all ages) game court
  • 2:00 pm - Water Balloon Toss (all ages) game court
  • 3:00 pm - Rubber Duck Sprint (under 12) Trout Stream Bridge
  • 4:00 pm - Frozen T-shirt Contest (all ages) game court
  • 4:30 pm - 6:00 pm - BINGO
The Beach Cookout begins at 11 AM and continues until 3:30 PM. Choose from hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken sandwiches or combos including chips and a drink.

The Tiki Bar and Ice Cream at the Cabana both open at 11 AM
and continue through 10 PM. Enjoy your favorite beverage or the traditional 4th of July treat, ice cream.

Evening Dinning includes a Pasta Dinner on the Terrace and a Prime Rib Buffet at Lakeview Restaurant. The pasta dinner includes
 Caesar Salad, Macaroni and Ham Salad, Seasoned Italian Snow Peas, Breadsticks, Vegetarian Lasagna, Blackened Chicken Fettuccini Alfredo, Baked Meatballs and Marinara - with Fresh Fruit, Cookies and Brownies for dessert. (Adults $14/Children $7.00).  The Prime Rib Buffet is  $24.95 for adults, Children 12 and under $12.95


End your holiday watching one of the best fireworks displays anywhere in the mountains. Take a fireworks cruise and view the display from the middle of Lake Lure, or, stay on land and watch the Color Guard
Presentation of Flags and Colors to the Star Spangled Banner followed by the Fireworks display over Lake Lure beginning at 9:20 PM.
