Stories of Mountain Folk:  Amy's guest is Charles Brown, a demonstrator at 2012 Mountain Heritage Day, who talks about being a "frontier long hunter." Music:  "Soldiers Joy" by the Ross Brothers.
 
Black Roots of Appalachia: Victoria's guest is Ida Jean Allen Bryson who grew up in Little Savannah in Webster. She talks about growing up and becoming a WAC in the US Army.  Music"Blind now & Led by a Child" by the Cochman Family.
 
Down Another Road:  Judy's guest is Jared Gallamore from West Asheville. They talk about his interest in the Cherokee heritage.  Music”South Wind” by Pic & Play Dulcimer Group.

Stories of Mountain Folk: Amy's guest is 91-year old Bertie Elizabeth Parris from Alarka, who tells about her very interesting life.  Music: "When We All Get to Heaven" by Mountain Faith.

Black Roots of Appalachia: Victoria's guest is Edith Callahan, teacher of the year for Smoky Mountain High School.  Music: "There is a Fountain"-Southern Gospel.

Down Another Road: Judy's guest is Shelia Kay Adams from Madison County. They talk about the writing process.  Music: "Hangin' by a Thread"" by the Clover.

Storytelling: Amy shares her story about a sad day in train history, "Cowee Tunnel," that took place in 1883. The story is accented by the song "Cowee Tunnel" by Milan Miller.


Creative Corner: Doreyl's guest is Sharon Petersen whose grandmother was from Wolf Mountain. Sharon creates creative colorful fabric dolls. Music: "Coat of Many Colors" by the Heltons.

Stories of Mountain Folk Podcast 3-3-12

March 3, 2012 - The first hour-long program with 3 new interviewers: Amy tells her story about basic training while in the Air Force; Doreyl's guest is Luzell Wiggins Bennet, an artist from Qualla, and Amy then talks with a naturalist, Jeff Gottlieb from Whittier (Sheila Kay Adams sings "Camp a Little While in the Wilderness"). Krista Robbe and Nichole Jarosinski, two young interviewers with the segment called "Apple Butter," are welcomed to the show, with Krista's first interview with guest Angie Davis from Alarka about being a mountain girl (we hear "Been to the East Been to the West" by the Freight Hoppers).

Then, Judy Rhodes in her new segment entitled, "Down Another Road,"
introduces her mother Arbie Rhodes from Arden to our audience, ("Maybe" by the Muses opens this interview) and the two talk about Arbie's early years as a student and then becoming a teacher. The programs ends with "My Home is Across the Blue Ridge Mountains" by Earl Taylor & Jim McCall

February 25, 2012  Stories of Mountain Folk from Catch the Spirit of Appalachia  - Amy begins the show with a story called "My Uncle Ray," along with the song "Gonna Lay Down My Old Guitar," by Jim Greer; Doreyl's interview is with Dot Conner from Sylva… they discuss Dot's mother Mary Jane Queen, and the upcoming CSA Scholarships for Appalachian Studies. Amy then talks with Bonnie Ensley from Tuckasegee, who tells the story of her father, Dave Coggins, who was an old time mail carrier on Cullowhee Mountain. Woodslore and Wildwoods Wisdom at Walnut Creek Preserve’s Nature Center

January 28, 10:30 AM to 12 PM at Walnut Creek Preserve Nature Center - Doug Elliott offers "Woodslore and Wildwoods Wisdom: Stories, Songs, and Lore Celebrating the Natural World".  Whether he's singing about catfish, pontificating on possums, extolling the virtues of dandelions, cawing with crows, pondering the “nature” in human nature, telling wild snake tales or wailing out a jivey harmonica tune, Doug Elliott is known for his lively presentations as well as his broad, practical, scientific, and cultural knowledge of the Southern Appalachian bioregion.
Elliot will be performing a concert of amazing tales, lively tunes, traditional lore, outrageous personal narratives with facts stranger than fiction. He flavors it all with regional dialects, lively harmonica riffs, and more than a few belly laughs. Time and weather permitting, there may also be an interpretive natural history stroll around the grounds of Walnut Creek Preserve after the presentation. Children and adults are welcome and the event is free.

To get to Walnut Creek Preserve’s Nature Center from the Tryon NC
and Columbus area, take NC HWY – 108 E and turn left on to NC HWY – 9 N toward Lake Lure. Follow NC HWY – 9 N for 5 miles and turn right onto McGuinn Road (at the Exxon Station). Go 1 mile to the intersection with Big Level Road; turn left, go 2/10ths of a mile and take the first right onto Aden Green Road. Follow Aden Green for 4/10ths of a mile and turn left on Herbarium Lane and into Walnut Creek Preserve. Take the first left onto Conservatory Lane which takes you to the parking area for the Nature Center.

Swannanoa Solstice this weekend in Asheville

December 18   Swannanoa Solstice  The annual performance of A Swannanoa Solstice. Headlined by world renowned musicians Al Petteway, Amy White, and Robin Bullock playing guitar, mandolin, fiddle, Appalachian dulcimer, piano, harp, and world percussion, these performances are enhanced further by the voices and talents of special guest musicians, storytellers, dancers, and host Doug Orr. Gather with family and friends for one of the two performances offered to accommodate ticket demand for this holiday tradition
Performances are 2 PM and 7 PM at the 
Diana Wortham Theatre, 2 S Pack Square in Asheville NC
