The Marvelous Wonderettes perform at the Flat Rock Playhouse's Hendersonville Theatre

August 16- September 9:   Flat Rock Playhouse presents "The Marvelous Wonderettes"  A new musical celebrating the greatest hits of the 50's and 60's. The 1958 Springfield High School prom is where we meet the Wonderettes - Betty Jean, Cindy Lou, Missy and Suzy – four girls with hopes and dreams as big as their crinoline skirts and voices to match. As we learn about their lives and loves, we are treated to the girls performing beautifully arranged renditions of classic ‘50s songs.

Later in the show we visit their ten-year reunion where they perform high-octane, soulful renditions of classic ‘60s tunes. We see how their friendships have changed and endured in this captivating new show fresh off its New York run. Evenings Wed-Sat 8:00PM, Matinees Wed, Thurs, Sat & Sun 2:00PM

Friday, June 15th, will be an unforgettable night of hot picking, down home stories and the best of American music. As a prelude to the 18th annual Wayne C. Henderson Festival & Guitar Competition, Wayne Henderson & friends from as far afield as Texas to Rugby, Virginia, will heat things up on the Music Center stage before turning it over to the award-winning Gibson Brothers band.

The Gibson brothers are renowned for their bluegrass-gospel songs, superb vocals, and stellar instrumental chops. Steve Leftridge of PopMatters says: "Eric and Leigh Gibson might have, pound-for-pound, the most impeccably fine-sounding traditional bluegrass band on the contemporary scene. The reason these guys can't lose is that, quite simply, they sound so great. Eric and Leigh sing bluegrass' tightest harmony blend, and instrumentally the group plays with unmatched alacrity and taste."

 Wayne Henderson is also a first-rate luthier, producing about 20, sought-after instruments a year - mostly guitars and occasionally mandolins, fiddles or ukeleles. Wayne's instruments are most respected for their volume, tone, and resonance and there is a long waiting list for his guitars. Wayne is a recipient of a 1995 National Heritage Award presented by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Mother's Day Weekend Events: Téada performs tonight at Diana Wortham in Asheville

"John Martin and Southern Drive Band" Performs at the Saluda Mountain Jamboree

January 21 - Saluda Mountain Jamboree, Friendship Chirch Road, Saluda NC - Upcoming country music artist, "JOHN MARTIN & SOUTHERN DRIVE BAND" will perform live.  John Martin is a Georgia singer and songwriter  has recently signed a recording contract with Cowboy Up Records in Texas. He has traveled throughout the south and east to bring his music to many spots.  He has performed in some of country music's most recognized venues in Texas, Tennessee, Indiana, Alabama, Iowa, Virginia, North & South Carolina, Georgia, Kentucky, and more.

Lake Junaluska hosts the 11th Annual Appalachian Christmas Celebration

December 9-11  11th Annual Appalachian Christmas Celebration  -  Appalachian Christmas begins at 7:30 PM Friday  in the  historic Stuart Auditorium with a performance by the Lake Junaluska Singers featuring Celtic sounds, traditional carols, and selections from Handel’s Messiah. This year’s Appalachian Christmas Celebration is perfect for the whole family.

On Saturday morning some of the best crafters in Western North Carolina are showcased at the Christmas Craft Show. from 9 AM to 5 PM.

At 2:30 PM the entertainment continues with a concert by the Junaluska Singers and  special guests, Voices in the Laurel. Evening  performances feature the legendary Southern Appalachian Mountains musicians and famous storyteller, David Holt.

On Sunday the Advent Worship Service will be held in the Terrace Hotel Auditorium at 9 AM.

Do-it-yourself Messiah Tonight in Tryon

Posem Concert Series at the Purple Onion

Nov 6,  6 PM at The Purple Onion, 16 Main Street in Saluda NC - "Teddy's Piece", A play by Rema Keen and Kate Larken. The POSEM concert series continues this week with Rema Keen's performance of "Teddy's Piece" and Phil & Gaye Johnson opening the show at 6:00 PM. The play is told in a rich Appalachian vernacular and creates a captivating oral tapestry based upon the stories and journals of Rema's Grandmother, Teddy, whose full name is Lillian Estelle "Teddy" McCoy Wright Triplett.

   

According to Steve Ruth, reviewer for the Kentucky newspaper The Mountain Eagle,  "This extraordinary play explores the experiences of this Appalachian woman through the seasons of her life using narrative and music. As the play progresses, Keen transforms her character effortlessly from child to mother, from coal miner's widow to wise elder.  In this award winning play audiences are treated to a rare and vivid portrait of this remarkable woman's life as this actor brings alive her Grandmother's memories. This life story transcends its mountain roots and becomes a universal tale of hope and survival."

Teddy's Piece is a story of strength and perseverance, of love and loss, carrying within it the poetry of a life. It is an example of the power of storytelling for preserving our stories and heritage for future generations. The hope is that it will inspire others to pass on and preserve their own family stories.

Phil & Gaye Johnson of Green Creek, North Carolina open the evening. They have lived the Southern Appalachian country music tradition as an acoustic duo for the past 27 years. Playing guitar, mandolin, dobro, harmonica, and tight harmonies, they regularly perform and teach at major events across the United States. The Johnsons are three time winners of the "most outstanding performance" award at The Asheville Mountain Dance and Folk Festival, have five folk music and storytelling recordings on the ASTER label, and have published a series of instructional books and videos. They have made several appearances on Garrison Keilor's A Prairie Home Companion as well as many other syndicated radio and television program

Asheville's Moogfest Begins Today

October 28-30   Moogfest  is three extraordinary days of music, featuring amazing music and bands, exhibitions, installations, films, workshops, and discussions... all celebrating the spirit and expansive vision of Bob Moog.

Moogfest celebrates Bob Moog’s legacy as a sonic pioneer, the common theme of the festival’s rich array of musical offerings.  Performers use a wide range of Moog instruments – the Minimoog Voyager, the Little Phatty, the Etherwave Theremin, Moogerfoogers, and the Moog Guitar – but are not  limited to only Moog instruments.  Instead, artists will be chosen for their role in creating unique and groundbreaking musical experiences that embody the essence of Bob Moog’s visionary and creative spirit.

In addition to unique concerts by renowned performers of all kinds, Moogfest offers opportunities to engage with the artists in panel discussions, question and answer sessions, and workshops.  There will also be interactive experiences for the audience to explore their own musical creativity with a variety of Moog instruments.  The festival also offers visual art exhibitions, installations, and film screenings throughout the weekend.

October 15—In this segment, Amy introduces the show with a song by the Ubunlu Dillsboro Choir , "Bismilah;"Doreyl interviews Hank Shuler, potter from Franklin, and they talk about the upcoming ColorFest in Downtown Sylva on October 22. Then, we learn more about the Ubunlu Choir and their Community Song Leader Tom Tyre (from Franklin). During this last part of the show, we hear the choir sing "Aleluia," "Belle Mama ," and "Ateh Malkuth

October 22—The little voices of the Butterpats open this fun show with "Get Along Little Doggies," then Doreyl interviews two wonderful artists: Tadashi Torii, glass blower, and Cornia Pia, acrylic artist--both from Sylva; Amy's guest is Bob Plott who discusses the history of the official North Carolina state dog, the Plott Hound Dog. Closing out the show is another small voice from the Cockman Family, singing "The Ballad of Ole Blue."
