Happy Halloween from Appalachian Vioces

Submitted by Willa Mays, Executive Director Applachian Vioces
This weekend you may be on the lookout for ghosts and goblins lurking on your doorstep, just waiting for a generous helping of sugary snacks. Halloween brings spooky outfits, haunted houses, and cheap scares, but the truly terrifying spots -- like mountaintop removal mine sites -- are scary all year round

In the spirit of Halloween, Huffington Post published an article calledThe 10 Scariest Real Places in America. Wondering about the number one scariest locale? Downhill from strip mining operations in West Virginia. Whether it’s the toxic coal slurry, the flooding, or the constant threat that forceful blasting will send a chunk of flyrock through your roof, living near a mountaintop removal site is indeed a scary thought.

When you are handing out candy to pirates and princesses this year, consider giving a gift to Appalachian Voices. We promise you won’t get any tricks from us! In fact, we might just return the treat. If you give $35 or more, we’ll send you our new Appalachian Voices tote bag!

To give (and get) a Halloween treat, go to AppalachianVoices.org/tote.

Happy Halloween!

Willa Mays
