Some our favorite flies this summer have included various midges for rivers like the Davidson and the Tailwaters, Terrestrials such as ants, inchworms, and crickets for all of our trout rivers, and mayflies in various stages depending on the river and the day. The Smallmouth Bass have been eagerly attacking chartreuse and white streamers as well as crawfish patterns. I would also like to say, from the perspective of a former trout snob that has been indoctrinated in the ways of the mighty bronze back, that Smallmouth Bass on the fly might be one of the most underrated and incredibly fun things one can do with a fly rod. They are pound for pound the hardest fighting fish in Western North Carolina.
Come by the shop or give us a call because the last and most important thing to remember about this time of year is that you have to stay flexible because weather, bugs and fish in the mountains change on a daily basis and there is no better tool in a fly fisherman's box than the most up to date information. See you on the water. -David Grossman, Curtis Wright Outfitters. http://www.curtiswrightoutfitters.com
