Great Smoky Mountains National Park Update

All National Parks are now working under mandatory 5% sequestration budget cuts. Great Smoky Mountains National Park reports that budget cuts have resulted in hiring limitations and slowed planned park maintenance, resulting in the closing of some park facilities and delayed openings for others for the 2013 season. Work on US 441 is "at this point, slightly ahead of schedule," according to Jason Lambert, Director of Commerce for the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. His remarks were made at a Cherokee NC Chamber of Commerce meeting this morning.

Plates for the Parkway, June 10-13 helps restaurants raise money for the Blue Ridge Parkway. Participating restaurants agree to donate a minimum of 10 percent of a meal or the day's sales to benefit the BRP Foundation's efforts to protect the Parkway. The deadline to register is May 31.
