Fall Color News: Grandfather Mountain a Favorite

The amazing diversity of plant life makes Grandfather Mountain one of the best fall color destinations in the Southern Appalachians. The yellow and red pigments that lay beneath the green chlorophyll begin to show through as autumn approaches and the chlorophyll fades. Elevation also is a factor in plant diversity and color intensity. Grandfather Mountain rises abruptly from the valley floor, 4,000 feet in elevation with sixteen distinct ecological communities. Because diversity of plant life means diversity of colors, and Grandfather Mountain is the most biologically diverse mountain in the East, the fall color is among the best.
