Swain County's Tourism Website Goes Mobile

On January 9, 2012, the Bryson City / Swain County Chamber of Commerce unveiled a new mobile version of GreatSmokies.com, its tourism development website. Smartphone users are now automatically redirected to the mobile site — m.GreatSmokies.com.

"In 2011, ten percent of our website visitors were using some sort of mobile device," said Karen Wilmot, Chamber Director. "And that was a 300 percent increase over the previous year. The web is definitely going mobile and we are enthusiastically going with it."

According to Wilmot, the mobile version contains virtually all the travel information found on the desktop version — lodging, dining, attractions, activities, shopping, and visitor services. There's an up-to-date calendar of events; a page of deals and discounts; and a Chamber membership directory with one-page profiles of each member business. She added, "Because smartphones are most often used 'on the road', we have integrated Google maps, providing turn-by-turn directions from the user's current location to downtown Bryson City."

Funded by the Swain County Tourism Development Authority, the mobile website was developed by Deep Creek Arts of Whittier in collaboration with Dnet Internet Services of Franklin, which provided the backend database integration.
