NC Leaf Report: Chimney Rock Prediction

"The Blue Ridge Mountain range features one of most colorful and longest leaf color displays in the US, attracting visitors from around the world. Many areas in the Western North Carolina Mountains have experienced a cool spring and ample moisture through July.  Throughout August and September there was a fairly dry pattern that, if continued, will be beneficial for good fall colors," said Ron Lance, Naturalist, Chimney Rock at Chimney Rock State Park.

While it's beautiful year-round in Chimney Rock and the Hickory Nut Gorge, if you are planning a trip around the Fall leaf season.  Park officials predict peak colors to occur between late October and the first week of November. It's important to note that there are many factors that influence when leaves change color and any prediction is nothing more than a best guess. Please check back often--as the weather changes our forecast may change as well.

Chimney Rock Park offers one of the nations most unique natural wonders
. Standing atop the Chimney Rock, a 500 million-year-old giant granite monolith overlooking Hickory Nut Gorge, visitors are awed by the breathtaking view that spreads 1200 vertical feet beneath them and 75 miles across the Carolinas. The state-owned park, located in Chimney Rock North Carolina, encompasses 1,000 acres, including the Chimney itself and the beautiful Hickory Nut Falls.  Chimney Rock Park is a "must see" for  any trip to the mountains.  Get information about Chimney Rock NC and cabin rentals and lodging here.

NC Leaf Report: September 27

It's officially fall and time to follow the progress of the incredible NC mountains leaf color. There are already noticeable changes in a variety of areas while green still dominates at 80% - 90%. in most lower elevations.

According to
Howie Neufeld, Ph.D., Professor of Plant Physiology at Appalachian State University, "If I had to make a guess right now, I would predict a slightly earlier peak to the fall foliage colors this year in the mountains, with perhaps the weekend of October 7-9 being the peak in the Boone/Grandfather area, and maybe the next weekend further south around Asheville. In the Highlands/Cashiers area, you can often expect colors to peak at around the same time as in Boone, or just slightly afterwards. In the Smokies, colors will peak in early October at the higher elevations, and then work their way downslope, with a delay of about 5 days for every 1,000’ drop in elevation."

The official website for the Great Smoky Mountain National Park provides updates along with photos of the color progress in a variety of Park areas. " Fall Color Report, September 26, 2011 - There is just a hint of color in the earliest changing trees at this time. A few sourwoods, dogwoods, maples, and birches are showing a little color along roadways, but the mountains are still predominantly green at all elevations. Fall wildflowers such as cardinal flower, black-eyed Susan... read more...

The leaf reports
will help you determine where to go in the NC Mountains whether you are already in the mountains or just planning your trip. Western North Carolina has one of the longest leaf seasons in the country thanks to varying elevations and climate conditions.

North Carolina Big Sweep on October 1

North Carolina Big Sweep, the annual statewide cleanup of waterways around North Carolina, takes place on Saturday, October 1, from 9 AM to1 PM this year. Cleanup efforts will take place on the French Broad River using canoes from the Asheville Outdoor Center to Jean Webb Park in the River Arts District. Other groups will clean trash from Carrier Park and along the roadways in the area.

Two local environmental non-profits are spearheading the cleanup efforts. RiverLink is organizing the floating cleanup, while Asheville Greenworks will lead groups on area roadsides. Dave Donnell of the Asheville Outdoor Center has graciously offered to host the cleanup orientation and lend canoes for volunteers to use to pick up trash in the water, and 1-800-Got-Junk is picking up collected trash.

North Carolina Big Sweep, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that plans and coordinates the statewide Big Sweep. North Carolina Big Sweep was founded as Beach Sweep in 1987 by Dr. Lundie Spence of the North Carolina Sea Grant College Program. In 1989, the public-private partnership officially became Big Sweep, the nation's first statewide waterway cleanup. Since its founding, North Carolina Big Sweep has had almost 290,000 volunteers and collected over 9.8 million pounds of trash from our environment in North Carolina.

"This cleanup is really important in North Carolina, because litter hurts our local economies, especially tourism and new business recruitment," said Chip Dodd, Big Sweep NC chairman. "Litter also contaminates our water supply and endangers people and wildlife."

Volunteers will meet at 9:00 AM at the Asheville Outdoor Center located at 521 Amboy Rd for cleanup orientation, receive cleanup supplies and then divide into teams to clean up the French Broad River.

"Big Sweep a great chance to get out on the river, meet some like minded folks and help improve our most valuable resource - so come and help," requests Karen Cragnolin, executive director of RiverLink.

For more information, contact Dave Russell at RiverLink by phone at 252-8474, ext. 11, or e-mail dave@riverlink.org.

National Public Lands Day in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park

On Saturday, September 24, Great Smoky Mountains National Park will celebrate National Public Lands Day by hosting several volunteer projects in a unified effort with many public lands across the country. National Public Lands Day is the nation's largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance the public lands that Americans enjoy. Those interested in participating at the Smokies will have a chance sign up for either a trail rehabilitation or a native meadows restoration project.

The Trails Forever program - a partnership between the national park and Friends of the Smokies - will be hosting a Forney Ridge Trail project.Adult volunteers (18 years old or older) can work with the park trail crew to reconstruct a section of this popular trail. The work will include collecting, moving, breaking and setting rock as well as naturalizing some sections where work as already been completed. To RSVP to participate in this opportunity or for more information, contact Trails & Facilities Volunteer Coordinator, Christine Hoyer at 828/497-1949 or Christine_Hoyer@nps.gov.

Park resource managers are recruiting for volunteers to help restore native meadows in Cades Cove. Remnant stands of our native Indian Grass remain scattered throughout the Cove. Volunteers can help the park collect seed from this native grass that provides outstanding wildlife cover and nourishment for a variety of wildlife including ground nesting birds, small mammals, turkeys, and deer. To RSVP to participate in this opportunity or for more information, contact Volunteer Coordinator, Dana Soehn at 865/436-1265 or Dana_Soehn@nps.gov.

Also occurring on the same day, the long-time B and W Y-12 Help to the Smokies Volunteer Team plans to participate by working at the popular Chimney's Picnic Area to improve a majority of the picnic sites with replacement of new and improved stand up grills. Over the years, these grills have developed rusted holes and corroded walls due to the extreme weathering conditions at the 3,000 foot elevation site. The volunteer crew will install 68 new grills with a cement foundation anchored in gravel picnic pads. These pads were also rebuilt with the help of B&W Y-12 during previous rehabilitation of the Chimney's Picnic Area. This year, B&W Y-12 is celebrating its 15 year partnership with the Park in providing annual volunteer support and corporate funding to accomplish visitor facility improvements.

In addition, several volunteers trained in the teaching of Leave No Trace principals will be stationed at popular visitor areas at Clingmans Dome, Sugarlands Visitor Center, and Oconaluftee Visitor Center. They will reach out to the public to discuss and promote responsible recreational practices. The Smokies' Leave No Trace program strives to educate all those who enjoy the outdoors about the nature of their recreational impacts as well as techniques to prevent and minimize such impacts that are created by combined effects of millions of outdoor enthusiasts.

The Asheville Cinema Society begins 2nd Season with a Riverlink Fund Raiser

Sept 23  - The Asheville Cinema Society (ACS) kicks off its second season with "The River Why," the story of 20-year-old fly fisherman Gus Orviston, who leaves his big city home to live in a secluded cabin on the banks of a wild river and do nothing but fish. Instead of finding fishing bliss, his desolation drives him on a reluctant quest for self-discovery.

The event will be a fundraiser for RiverLink and a membership drive for ACS, taking place at the Diana Wortham Theater in Downtown Asheville on Friday, Sept. 23. The Asheville Cinema Society (ACS) will be giving 20 percent of the ticket price of $25 to help RiverLink protect North Carolina's rivers and streams. In addition, ACS is extending a discounted membership offer of $250 per person (a $50 savings) and $400 per couple (a $100 savings) for its 2011-2012 Season (September 2011 - April 2012).

The Asheville Cinema Society was founded in 2010 to bring highly entertaining independent feature films, foreign films and documentaries to Western North Carolina. ACS is showing 15 films this year; two Tuesday nights per month at Asheville's  Biltmore Regal in Biltmore Park. Following the screening, the filmmaker or someone associated with the film or an expert versed in the subject matter of the film will participate in a Q&A.

Get on the Bus - with Asheville's Riverlink

RiverLink's Bus Tours begin again this month. The RiverLink Bus Tour offers answers about Asheville's past, present and future: What is the Wilma Dykeman RiverWay Plan and what does it hold for Asheville's future? What are the plans for the old Cotton Mill down on Riverside Drive? How did the Flood of 1916 change the river area landscape?

The next tour will be Thursday, Sept. 15, when the public is invited to tour the French Broad and Swannanoa Rivers with RiverLink. The tour departs from the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce parking area. Participants should arrive at about 11:45 so that the tour may start promptly at noon.

You will learn some local history and visit some streets and neighborhoods you have never seen before.

Labor Lday - A Celebration of the American Worker

Labor Day, always celebrated on the first Monday in September,  is dedicated to the achievements of the American Worker and the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.
The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City through the Central labor Union. In 1884 the first Monday in September was selected as the holiday, as originally proposed, and the Central Labor Union urged similar organizations in other cities to follow the example of New York and celebrate a "workingmen's holiday" on that date. The idea spread with the growth of labor organizations, and in 1885 Labor Day was celebrated in many industrial centers of the country. Over the years, more than 20 states passed legislation honoring workers and on June 28 of 1894, the US Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories.

The original legislation set forth the outline of how to observe the holiday:
a street parade to exhibit to the public "the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations" of the community, followed by a festival for the recreation and amusement of the workers and their families. Today's celebrations tend to be much less formal and, unfortunately, with little acknowledgment of the American Worker's contribution to the nation's development as a world economic power.

"The vital force of labor added materially to the highest standard of living and the greatest production the world has ever known and has brought us closer to the realization of our traditional ideals of economic and political democracy. It is appropriate, therefore, that the nation pay tribute on Labor Day to the creator of so much of the nation's strength, freedom, and leadership — the American worker." -the US Department of Labor.

Labor Day Event: Free Meal for Pregnant Women

There's Labor day...the there's LABOR DAY. Most women know the difference. And this year, the two come together in a unique and fun way.

Jack of Hearts in Weaverville is celebrating both Labor Days at once this year. They are inviting pregnant women who are about to go into labor to their restaurant for a free meal. On top of that you could win free food for a year, but the rules on that contest are pretty nuts. Check out this piece from local news source, The Mountain Xpress:

How about this for a quirky and unique holiday event? On Sunday, Sept. 4, Jack of Hearts is taking Labor Day in a whole new direction, inviting all expecting mothers in their third trimester to eat for free at the Weaverville pub. From noon until 10 PM, moms-to-be receive a lunch or dinner entree on the house, while their kids (those not still in utero) eat for half price.

Live music will be provided, and door prizes will be offered from local businesses like Sensibilities Day Spa, Nest Organics, Dancing Bear Toys and more.

Very funny — and slightly disturbing — is the offer of a year's worth of meals at Jack of Hearts, should you have your baby at the event and then name it either Jack or Jackie. We wonder if there's anyone out there crazy enough to consider it. "We will have a live doctor on staff just in case, as well as some nurses. I think there will be some midwives there, as well. It could get wild," says Jack of Hearts publicist Bob Collins.
The owner of both Jack of Hearts and Jack of the Wood, Joe Eckert, says that a couple of the women that work for him are either expecting or have just given birth — to this he credits his inspiration for the event. “When I think of Labor Day — I have kids — I think of labor,” Eckert says. It’s a tough time. So let’s get them all together and let them have a good time. It’s meant for the women to chill and have a little contact with each other while they’re going through this.”

Jack of Hearts is located at 10 South Main St. in Weaverville NC. For more information call 828-645-2700
